  • Summary Description

    Metacarcinus novaezelandiae is a distinctively shaped crab, with a wide carapace and short, slender legs. It is iron-grey to rust-red above and cream below, often speckled with pinkish brown. The carapace is flattened, with leg segments being fringed with long hairs. The abdomen in both sexes has 6 segments. M. novaezelandiae can reach sizes of 110 mm wide (females) to 150 mm wide (males).
