    Sargassum muticum is a large yellowish-brown seaweed native to the waters of the Japanese archipelago. With periods of rapid growth, dispersal methods to suit many habitats and great tolerance to a range of environmental conditions, it is able to spread very quickly in a wide range of areas (Cohen 2005).
