  • Summary Description

    Pyromaia tuberculata is a pear-shaped crab that grows up to 20 mm long. It has a single spine projecting forwards from between the eyes. Its eyes are without orbits, and they are non-retractable. Its four walking legs are long and spindly, the front ones being the longest. It is a brown-yellow colour and has fine hairs on the surface of the carapace.

    Has been established in several eastern Australia locations.  In Port Philip Bay populations are limited due to predation by globefish. Has established invasive populations in Japan, persisting in even polluted envirnments like Tokyo Bay. Also established in New Zealand and Patagonia.
